Majidu Chande Kili: A Journey Through Art

Majidu Chande Kili, born in 1979 in the serene village of Livangula near Nakapanya in southern Tanzania, is an artist whose journey into the world of painting is as remarkable as the vibrant pieces he creates. His early years in the village were far removed from the bustling art scene of Dar es Salaam, but they laid the foundation for a life dedicated to artistic expression.

In 1993, at the age of 14, Majidu moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, in search of better opportunities. However, the transition was not easy. Despite his passion for art, Majidu faced significant challenges in entering the Tinga Tinga Cooperative, a renowned group of artists who were pioneers in the Tinga Tinga art movement. Without the immediate opportunity to join the cooperative, Majidu took on work as a gardener, a job far removed from the artistic ambitions he harbored.

It took three long years before Majidu's talent caught the eye of those within the Tinga Tinga community. His persistence paid off when, under the leadership of Saidi Chilamboni, he was finally accepted into the cooperative. The late 1990s were a transformative period for the cooperative, as it transitioned from painting in the open streets to a new, permanent building in 1997. It was within these walls that Majidu began to truly hone his craft.

Majidu's artistic journey was deeply influenced by the training and mentorship he received. His creative spirit quickly set him apart from his peers. He became known for developing unique designs that stood out even within the diverse Tinga Tinga tradition. His work, characterized by vibrant colors and imaginative compositions, caught the attention of art lovers both locally and internationally.

One of the pivotal moments in Majidu's career came when he was discovered by the ambassador of South Korea. This opportunity led to a five-year employment where Majidu’s artistic focus shifted to an unusual medium—bottles. For half a decade, he painted bottles that were presented at various events organized by the South Korean embassy, a testament to his versatility and adaptability as an artist.

Majidu's work has not been confined to Tanzania alone. His paintings have been displayed in numerous countries, including Switzerland and Mauritius, allowing his unique style to reach a global audience. His participation in exhibitions at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam further solidified his reputation as a significant figure in the Tanzanian art scene.
