Augustino Mpochogo

Augustino Mpochogo: A Portrait of Passion and Tradition

Augustino Mpochogo, born in 1974 in the village of Mangaka, located 10 km west of Masasi in southern Tanzania, is a distinguished artist of the Makua tribe. Although not associated with the renowned Tinga Tinga family, Mpochogo has carved out his own unique niche in the vibrant world of Tanzanian art.

Mpochogo's journey into the world of painting was unconventional. Initially working as a security guard in Dar es Salaam, his path to becoming an artist was shaped by the encouragement of his older brother, Saidi Paulo. Saidi saw Mpochogo’s potential and persuaded him to leave his security job and pursue a career in painting.

When asked about his motivations for painting, Mpochogo explains, “I paint to sell my work and provide for my family.” His paintings are not only a source of livelihood but also a reflection of his artistic vision. Mpochogo's work is characterized by its focus on unity within nature. He depicts animals in repetitive patterns, such as Kanga birds and hippos, often isolating each species from others in his compositions. This method highlights the harmony and singularity of each animal group, reinforcing a sense of order and unity.

Despite not having participated in any exhibitions or public displays, Mpochogo’s paintings are highly sought after and sell quickly. His success as an artist is evident in his ability to build a new house solely from the income generated by his art. Remarkably, Mpochogo has never retained any of his own paintings; instead, he adorns his home with a painting of a Maasai by artist Mr. Spasio.

Having been a painter for five years, Mpochogo is content with his career and has no immediate plans beyond continuing his artistic endeavors. He remains dedicated to exploring new designs and styles, driven by a desire to offer his returning customers fresh and innovative works. Although he primarily paints in the Tinga Tinga style—learned from his teacher—Mpochogo's commitment to evolving his artistic approach keeps his work dynamic and engaging.

Through his art, Augustino Mpochogo not only sustains his family but also contributes to the rich tapestry of Tanzanian artistic heritage. His dedication and unique style make him a noteworthy figure in the contemporary art scene.
